Making Bassendean Matter

The state electorate of Bassendean encompasses the suburbs of Ashfield, Bassendean, Beechboro, Eden Hill, Kiara, Lockridge, and parts of, Bayswater, Bennett Springs, Embleton, and Morley. The boundaries have been reconfigured since the last election, so for some people this is their first time voting in Bassendean. It can be a bit confusing when a suburb, local government area, and state electorate all share the same name!

For its entire history, the seat of Bassendean has been held by Labor. In more marginal electorates, political parties pour in funding and make big promises to secure votes. But in electorates like Bassendean, where outcomes are taken for granted, there’s little incentive to invest and the major parties aren't compelled to take our priorities into account.

While on council I pushed for the kind of progressive action our community is calling for, however our local vision is continually frustrated at the state level. Despite strong advocacy from local government and community groups, facilities that form the heart of our community like Jubilee Reserve, Altone Youth Centre and Bassendean Oval remain in dire need of upgrades and financial contributions from the State Government.

Our open spaces are at risk of being lost when private land bankers are allowed to sit on prime real estate instead of building the houses our community needs on more appropriate development sites.

Our mature trees, which keep our suburbs cool and green, continue to be sacrificed by powerful property developers, leaving our neighbourhoods increasingly hot and barren.

While the people of Bassendean work hard to reduce our own emissions, big corporations are allowed to keep polluting and jeopardizing our future.

People also tell me they want to be a part of the opportunity presented by the renewable energy transition, one that doesn’t involve supporting new coal and gas, or destroying our environment. They understand that this shift isn’t just about protecting the planet; it’s also about reducing their cost of living and improving their household budgets.

Let’s seize this opportunity to make Bassendean, and what's most important to us, matter!
