I’m Renée, your community independent candidate for the state seat of Bassendean.

I believe in a future where our community thrives, where our children grow up in a healthy environment, and where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. I’m running for Parliament because I know we can create that future together.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked to help people and communities flourish—improving health, wellbeing, and connection. I’ve witnessed the incredible things we can achieve when local voices are empowered to shape their own future.

Yet, too often, our democracy feels disconnected from the people it’s meant to serve. Decisions are driven by party politics and corporate interests, instead of reflecting the priorities of our community. We need to bring community back to the centre of our democracy—ensuring that it’s our voices, not those of powerful lobby groups, that shape our future.

The challenges we face, like the climate crisis, are significant, but they also present an opportunity to create a brighter, more sustainable future together. By acting with integrity and prioritising people and the planet over party agendas, we can rise to these challenges and build a stronger, more hopeful, and community-led future.

Renée McLennan

Community Independent for Bassendean

Hi Bassendean,

Across Australia, communities like ours are turning away from party politics in favour of genuine, community-focused representation. Unlike party politicians, independents aren’t bound by party lines or internal power struggles, instead they are free to focus entirely on representing those who elected them. Independents can truly reflect the values and concerns they have heard from their communities and champion transparent decision making. Their position can be based on community sentiment, expert advice, and evidence, rather than being dictated by party agendas.

A third of Australians gave their first preference to an independent or minor party in the last Federal election. Despite fear-mongering by the major parties, thanks to Australia's preferential voting system, voting for an independent is never a wasted vote.
